They are not hard to hone at all, if the seller does a good job of setting the bevel and generally fixing the razor so it will in fact hone nicely. In the raw, they are a bit much for some honers and particularly for new honers, absolutely. If you get one from someone experienced in these razors you won't have any problem honing it and there is no extra work involved.
I might just have to start a Gold Dollar Honing for Gold Dollar Newbies thread. It's a different mindset from honing a nice Wacker or Boker. Back in the day, the GD66 in particular was way out wack. You would have an attack of the vapours if you saw me cheerfully applying razor to 60 grit belt hahaha! They are much more mild mannered now, but you still have to be prepared to do some heavy lifting, and own the steel.
