A couple of times when traveling, I fell back on the Mach x, but using all the skills I've learned as a straight and DE shaver. The results were _much_ better than anything I ever accomplished before having seen the light, while not nearly as good as what I can now do with proper tools.
So, many among this guy's clientele may be getting the best shaves of their lives…just not as good as they could be.Keep your pivot dry!

That really is a shame. No matter how much vintage decoration you put around and whatever genuine prep you do, if you end up using a mach 3, mach 5 or mach 20 to do the job, what's the point. At least use a shavette. I would suspect that most of their clients probably use an electric face-mower at home, so it's still an improvement for them.
My local barber does a 10$ shave with a cheap shavette and Astra blades using a hot lather machine that would break down if you looked at it to much, walls are mostly mirrors and old wrinkled maps of Italy and the white paint is pealing off everywhere. He also has the most beaten off strop I have ever seen (I'll take a picture next time!). His shop has way more cred than this guy's "vintage" shop.
I will however concede that, in the end, if their clients are happy with the experience, who really cares...

Aha. I checked SRP on my work computer and see the video. For some reason the video does not appear when viewing this thread on my iPhone. I will have to watch the blasphemy tonight on the home computer.

As someone else said too you would be surprised how close of a shave and irritation free you can get with cartridges when you apply everything you learned with stragihts. stretching, low pressure, multiple passes, good lather, face prep, ect..
That ok because the results are not the only reason I use a straight and in fact maybe even the least of them. I like the idea of using a piece of metal that I sharpened to take the hair off my face. Its an art, if you will. A skill. Not only in shaving but sharpening, honing, stropping, ect..
I guess what I am saying is I agree with you Trimmy and I am not threatened at all by this video and in fact feel that they are missing out on one of the coolest experiences of shaving with a cut throat straight razor. I, for one, am not missing out though and wouldn't change it no matter what someone else thinks. What a curse be a dull razor; what a prideful comfort a sharp one

Thanked: 3226Used to hear the same sort of scoffing comments on photography forums about film vs digital. Everyone is entitled to their own prejudices but usually in reality things are closer than most would care to admit. That is just my personal conclusion though.

Thanked: 1184Well the goofy dude is just trying to promote his business. He probably goes home and uses a straight just before he drops by the bank :<0)
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.
