I was not fully able to grasp the explanation about the tape. For a smiling blade, adding gradually more tape at the spine to the middle of the blade, could serve to guide the motion of doing a rocking stroke. If that's what is meant, than I fully second this statement, although I personally have no problem performing the rocking stroke (a.k.a. the rolling X) without the need to tape. If however the statement is made that more tape should be added to the toe and heel, than that's geometrical nonsense.

For the basic application of one layer of tape, it really does not matter that the tape runs up the tang. There is not a single reason why that should be avoided. While honing without tape, the blade rests on the hone upon two narrow strips of steel: the edge bevel and the flat strip of hone wear on the spine. Except for some razor by the Chinese brand "Double Arrow", which have a flaw in their geometrics near the shoulder, all decent razors have no problems touching the hone. Raising the flat strip of hone wear with a layer of tape, only alters the bevel angle, NOT the way the edge touches the hone. Whatever the kind of shoulder a razor has, does not affect the kind of contact the edge makes with the hone. Not without tape and not with tape. It doesn't hurt to avoid tape past the schoulder, but it does not offer any advantage either. Calling it an error to do so, is incorrect.

I'm also not a big fan of advising straight strokes on the hone. Some razors have a smiling edge. Many razors have an ever so slight warp in the blade. Straight strokes won't work on either of those. They only work on completely straight blades with completely straight edges. I would encourage every newbie to adopt the X-stroke right from square one.

Honing novices will be watching these videos. I'm making this post for them to know that some of this information is debatable.

    Best regards,
    Bart.

taping in the middle of the blade i mean if middle of the blade honed more then heel and tip you can tape that middle of the blade and hone as a result edge will be even.(you need to pay attention not do to too much)
Then smiling blade go head test it too and let me know .you may need not just 1 layer's but more then 1 to add to it. Basically you add until edge touches hone evenly. i know no one had told or done this and this concept is new. Just try and see.

I should add this because i think this is important. We are not talking about factory made smiling blades which is very rare in our time. conversation on the video is about smile blades has been made by the honers.
    thank you for your input.
when i record if i am not making mistake i should show 2 blades one is boker and another one was Genco .they were 2 different type blades. with shoulder and without it.
test it yourself and let me know i was right or wrong.
    thank you
