Thread: Please post some rolling x videos

As popular as smiling blades are, there seems to be shortage of vids showing honing technique for them.

I know that glen does a rolling x demo in the videos from asheville.

Videos are not on youtube yet, so you just have to watch the webcast and wait though

Thanks. i have been struggling with a blade with a bent toe tonight. this really helped piece together things.

In my opinion razors with smiles are great and of course razors with a perfectly straight edge are great too but I don't really like spending a lot of time with warped/bent razors because they almost never end up perfect for me. The rolling stroke and/or a very thin hone can help but in my experience the hone contact and resulting sharpness is usually not going to be perfectly uniform from heal to toe. With bent razors you usually have to settle for a little less than perfect which is something that I don't like to do and thus I don't keep them.

I watched you hone and you always start with heal down first am i right its just that i copied thatvfrom you and i like honing that way and it always gets the heal i find with most regular blades that the very toe and heals don't hit the hone for some reason.

I ended up "evening it out" using a dmt. It is still not perfectly straight. but good enough.

Yes, that is how I hone for the reasons that you described.
