It's playing right now here: Straight Razor Place - Webcast

But it's in an endless loop with other videos in queue, so the few who are lucky enough to catch the beginning are the truly blessed

    Hello again, Hoglahoo:

Thanks for providing the video. That is most informative. I assume that's glenn honing the razor.

    Regards,

Well, that depends on which video was in queue when you went to the webcast. Through the power of Da Bomb (Dave), the shave video I referenced is now available on YouTube (in two parts):

YouTube - Straight Razor Place '09 Convention. Simon shaving Dave - Part 1 of 2

Default Shaving Videos That Have Taught Me

    Hello, Hoglahoo:

Thanks for providing the video. I missed this part during my original viewing.

I especially advise those new to straight razor shaving to view this video many times, because it emphasizes short strokes and stretching. Also, you can tell minimum razor pressure is being applied.

One thing I did notice is that, unlike most barbers, he does not shave forehand the side burn area on the opposite side from where he stands. The whole idea for using forehand in that area on the opposite side is to avoid the blindside that could contribute to nicking the ear. Here, however, he compensates for the forehand move for the opposite side by kneeling, which makes it easy and safe to hold the razor the standard way.

It still works, though, and that goes back to the old dictum of using whatever moves that work best for you.

I like the video a lot. Well done, indeed.

    Regards,

    Obie

Thank you Obie for your generous review of my head shaving vid, particularly as it is not really apropos to this thread. It is really a terrible video, as videos go, with absolutely no cinematographic merits whatsoever. Yes, I am the Paris Hilton of shaving videos

    My dear Jimbo:

Ah, but you are indeed a gentleman.

I am especially impressed in the confidence with witch you handle that razor.

    Red face

I personally think that my straight razor shave video is the best out there. Sure, some may wonder if it's possible to objectively evaluate your own work, but I did some real soul-searching and decided that yes, I really did set the bar that high.

In fact, up until a few days ago I had not shaved for about a month and a half, and I was considering making a new video of me shaving my beard. I realized, though, that I probably wasn't going to top my previous effort. So I didn't document the shave at all. I'm glad I made that choice. The shave was quite peaceful with no lens staring me in the face. Since the last clip was uploaded I did get an HD camera, so I thought that'd be an improvement over the old one, but that would only mean showing my mug in crystal clarity...and no one needs to see that.

I love watching the other shaving videos out there, though. I learn from each and every one of them too.

Default Shaving Videos That Have Taught Me

    Hello, Mark:

Thanks for Jimbo's video. No, I had not seen that. I am glad I did.

There is much to be learned from Jimbo's lather-making technique, and the shave itself. Is that Taylor of Bond Street's or Trumper's?

From what I can tell, the stropping is, I believe, only on leather. And I like that razor, hair test and all.

I find the two-pass shave most educational. Jimbo's a one-handed shaver, except for against the grain on the neck when he switches to two hands.

Also, the second pass is a water pass against the grain all around with considerable amount of buffing. Most educational, indeed.

What I especially like about Jimbo's shaving — and I have mentioned this before — is the utmost confidence with which he handles the razor. That is most educational, because it is an important element in shaving with a straight razor. Holding the razor with confidence I learned early on from Lynn's DVD.

And my dear Jimbo: What a dashing devil you are with that goatee. I had a goatee in my youth in San Francisco and I looked like a Corsican assassin.

Thanks again, Mark, for the video. Yes, it is most educational.

    Regards,

    Obie

If this is an opportunity to express our thanks then I'd like to join in too. Recently there are quite a few sub par videos on the tube, and the techniques these people are using are really quite frightening, but that aside, the ones you've mentioned, and that by Blade Wielder himself have all been very instructional for me - and I would like them all to know that bits and pieces of what they were doing in their videos live on in my routine. No better compliment could I give.

    Cheers
I love the smell of shaving cream in the morning!
