I am with the others on singing praise to you on the video. Thank you so much! I am a VFD & drive wheel away from finishing my grinder and have been thinking of how I want to do the tool rest. Seeing yours helps a great deal.

They razor blank has to be that thick if you are making a 7/8 or 8/8 width so that the angle will be right on the finished blade.

The two wheel grinder is a great experiment, but not a great tool for razors in it present state. In theory it is great, but in practice it is so so. If I could figure out an easy way to make an adjustable rest/guide for the blank to rest on while grinding it would be a more useful machine to me, as it is I am most likely going to take apart the machine and make two grinders.

I have wondered how to get an even smile - the rest you are using makes absolute sense. Any chance you could post close-ups of it? Adjustment, etc.? Also, what grit belt are you using to start post heat treat grinding - looks like about a 60?????
    Thanks for a great post!
Here is a pic of my rest. It is not the best design, but it is what I could put together with the parts I had laying around my shop.

I usually start with a fairly coarse belt post heat treat. That is what works for me with the tool that I have and the way I work. If I had a larger grinder (2x72 or bigger) I would most likely start with a finer belt. There are lots of ways to skin a cat, my way is not necessarily the most efficient or best it is just what works for me.

Thanks, Charlie -really appreciate your answers. I burned the tip of one of my first razors during post heat treating grinding - I was using a 240 belt (2x72), and I think the problem was a too fine belt and too high a speed. I still have one left from that batch, so I'll try 120 and a much slower speed. A rest similar to yours is in my to do list.

Big thanks for this video, I was waiting for something like this for a year or so If I may ask, what are the approximate surface speeds on the two setups? The post heat treatment speed seems very low, wich isn't a bad thing in my opinion. I am building a similar setup, and I am looking for some guidelines to not burn the blade post heat treatment, but it won't take years to finish the grinding.

The speeds in feet per minute are about 390 and 2700. I do not like to grind faster than I can think, the slow speed suits me.

Charles Lewis on a skateboard would be a great video. Viral, for sure.
