Usually I just get a wedge shape and go to the grinder from there, It does not take long to establish the master grind/groove on the hollow. For me, with my tools and the way I work it takes less time grind the initial hollow than to forge the first hollow.

Thank you guys for being so encouraging.

Thanked: 335Charlie,
Have you ever tried hot cutting what you now saw by putting a hot chisel in the hardy hole and hammering out the shank shape? Years ago, many years ago - when I was a kid, I tried this when I made a new burner grate/pot holder for my farm grandma's stove. Grandpa had a small forge, smith's vice, and anvil that I got to use when I visited the farm.

I have not used a hot cut to cut out the shank part, but I do draw out the shank/tang portion instead of sawing. I usually use 3/4 X 1/4 stock. I will put about 3/4 length of the stock on the anvil with remainder held off of the anvil. I will then draw out that 3/4 section and make the step for the tang by forging. I do it both ways I guess I should have not used the lazy way in the video.

Very interesting. I like to see artisans and craftspeople explaining their work. It makes it easier for us "consumers" to appreciate the work that goes into it.

I got to thinking about it and did another video without the pre-sawn blank.
