What size wood block for a set of scales
Hi,
I was looking at some exotic woods and was wondering if a block 0.75" x 1.5" x 5" would be big enough for a pair.
Thanks

Are the existing scales on your razor less than 5"? (None of mine are, btw).
All the scales I've made are 1/8 to 3/16" thick, so you need a saw blade thin enough to rip the piece in half and leave that much material in each half... .75" is more than you'll need. Don't forget the saw teeth often have a "set" so it's not the thickness of the blade but the width of the cut (ie, the "kerf") that you want to measure. Making a trial cut on some scrap is the easiest way to determine the size of the kerf for a particular saw blade.
The 1.5" should be adequate for all but the largest of razors.

Thanks Joe! Just trying to get an idea of the material size needed. I will have to measure the scales length.

6" x 1" x 1/8" is an almost ideal size for scale blanks. 5" is probably a little too short.

6" is a minimum length. 5" is usually the size sold as knife scales.

Cool,
Thanks Joe the wood I was looking at was labeled as Knife scale material, looks like that is too short.
Thanks!!
