    Default Dbl Duck Goldenedge Scales

These are a MOTHER to unpin!

Not only do you have to try and protect the inlays it SEEMS the pins on these are BENT (from the two that I have done)

    Any tips or suggestions?

I have found that if I put an X in the pin itself then get the washers off, it at least gets you access to the pins.

Tapping them out is near IMPOSSIBLE do to the "S" curve of the pins....

If you can spread the scales enough a jeweler's saw blade might be one way ....... I've done at least one that way since I have the tool.

    That could work...
I was thinking if there was a blade thin enough to get in there....

I scribe till I get a good mark in the middle of the pin. Then under glass a very small center punch. I have a pin drill to start the hole by hand. Then to the drill press. Start with small dia. drills and work my way up till I get close to the washer. Then I go large dia. by hand to get the peen off. Slowly. The washers are most times a shell with nothing but rust on the underside. Sometimes I can save them. Sometimes not. If the pin is bent your going to have to do both sides. Fun huh ?

Ummm another thing... I never take them off unless I absolutely have to. There are lots of ways to sand and polish that tang and clean that pivot with out yanking off the scales. All a pain in the **** and slow going but keeps it all original.

I am right now in the same boat with a new acquisition from the mail box today. Unfortunately I think this one will have to come apart.

Pin drills for the next one then. I do have those so it is worth a try at least.
    Thanks 10Pups!

Sometimes I get lucky and hit the exact middle and they drill right out. Then it's just, file the end of the pin till the scale slides off.

Same as 10Pups for me as well. Score an X on it, use a pin drill with a 1/8th bit by hand, once it's got a little hole, onto the drill press using a 1/8 or smaller bit. At some point it will pop.
