Thanked: 0Sorry, it wasn't meant to be a joke. I probably should have asked the question of what to do with the blade before I went hacking at it with a Dremel. I will put those scales on a nice blade I have. Would you bother making a small set of scales for the blade, or would you throw it in the trash?
Sorry if I broke a golden rule of blade etiquette, as you can guess I'm a newbie!

I don't think you broke any rules, by sometimes threads like this are meant to be a joke.
The blade looks to be about an inch long now, why not leave it in the current scales, hone it up and give it a try, if it works well then make it a set of scales, you never know someone might have a set of broken scales that they could donate to the project.Bread and water can so easily become tea and toast

Change the scales to another blade for sure
Then you can use the short blade as a kamisori for cutting tape when honing?Saved,
to shave another day.

You know, I also thought it was a joke when I saw the photo. But, since we're all here, maybe it needs to go into this thread...

OK joking aside, I'm kinda curious how that might shave the neck area. Let us know how it does if you get it honed up. I may have a blade or two that could only be useful again if I ground it down like that.

Thanked: 1184I debated the joke thing before I spoke, being somewhat of a clown myself, but the thought of the scales getting hacked up made me cringe. No harm, no foul, no rules broke. Tb Mike that blade may serve a purpose I just don't see what unless you had all kinds of facial hair detail. Sideburns with chops and a spit between a dropping mustache with a low goat. You know, more hair than space between :<0) I would probably cut something off with the toe of it, being so short I might lose track of how flat it was laying. Be careful with trying it.
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

Hey Mike,
Far from any rules or etiquette broke.
You took a lemon and made something with it, you cleaned it up, polished it, chopped it down, gave it a unique barbers notch.
If you got it all done without wrecking the edge or blowing the temper you gained a whole lot of knowhow and garnered some great practice
on a much more advanced restoration level without ruining a blade.
That is more than I can say I pulled off straight out the gate.
I say good on ya.
It should be fun to play with for a while and now you are that much better prepared for your next project.
It looks very good for what it is.

Mike it's been about a week now - any luck with honing it? I'm curious as to whether or not it hones and if it will shave. There's a blade in my "to do" pile that might benefit.
