Honing issue
I've been trying to hone a razor for a while now. I couldn't seem to get anywhere with it so I ended up taking it to my DMT 325. I was able to get a nice clean bevel all the way across the blade on the DMT. Passed TNT. Thinking I was finally getting somewhere, I took it to my Norton 1k to refine the bevel, but even though nothing changed but the hone, when I got done with the 1k the blade wouldn't even grab on the TNT.
I can't imagine what I'm doing wrong. I figured if the bevel is set its set. I don't know how I could possibly ruin a good bevel on the 1k stone with just a bit of light honing.
Should I skip the 1k and set the bevel on the DMT and move to the 4k/8k?
Thanks to anyone who can help. I hope I made some sense.

Thanked: 1184Don't skip anything except maybe the TNT :<0) Can you shave arm hair after the 1K ? If so move on to the 4 .
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

It shaves arm hair after the DMT. After the 1k it feels like a butter knife.

Thanked: 177The hone may need lapping. Something is going on there. The 1k should just smooth out those 325 scratches without losing sharp.

Thanked: 1936Sounds like you really need to find a honing mentor. A dmt should be only used for lapping the stones and blade modifications. What is the razor you are trying to hone?

A wade and butcher near wedge with some spine wear issues. To clarify, I only went to the dmt because I know it cuts faster and I figured it would dipped up the process since the 1k wasn't doing anything.
I hone a different razor in the same 1k two days ago and got a great bevel, smooth finish and comfortable shave. This one razor is just driving me crazy.

Thanked: 1936Where are you from? Wedges are a real pita for a veteran...you might be better off laying that one doen for 6 months and revisiting it again after you have more experience
