That is so strange.
I wonder if the string has rubber in it?
Seems just where the string touched the scales?
Maybe the string breaking down and then causing the scales to break down in that one spot... Somewhat of a chain reaction?
Very strange.
Man what a beautiful display of razors! How does one happen upon such a glorious purchase?
Don't think it the string. Just old hard-rubber formulation on some blade held in a finite position forever.
Something we just don't see happening?
I was thinking of a lightning strike or local electrical shorts/issues. Sitting in various places over the years.
The blade faces are mostly perfect. Why did they not rust at all?
That's a good point. Somehow, that strange corrosion was localized to specific points, isolated very exactly. Seems the corrosive gases emitted by degrading scales has a broader effect.
I would not say broader.
Seems it is concentrated randomly where the air would come out from under the scales and rise. It's always there on these.
Someone needs to invent something to take off the scale stains like horn especially! I've tried different things but nothing yet.
Okay I think I'm getting the picture. The curve of the scales causing pressure at the tip right there on the tang.. Focusing the corrosive gases...
:)
That almost sounds dirty! Lol
It does not have to be a gas though. It could be a minute amount of corrosive liquid that is in contact with the steel, as the old rubber is breaking down. I liquid would make more sense with the stuff that comes off with the razor blade.
Shaun, that would make some sense there. I had to go back & look at the pic & it's more like a very small "puddle" like substance on both sides when it occurred.
The world shall never know.....
