What are you working on?

Only thing I have found to work on headlights is sanding and buffing.
Seems to come back anyway! Goo gone is pretty mild. The stuff on the window was a gooey mess. I don't know what caused it. Top stays down most all the time.
I see Meguiars makes a product to polish the plastic windows. Now that I have the crap off, I will try some of that.

Got my razors finished. Matt made those scales for the 472 for me.
3 layers, G-10, aluminum, and cocobolo. He put a good bit of banana in them and I knew they would take a deeper blade.
The Goedeckey was one that would come out the bottom of any scales I tried.
Seems a good thing to swap some stuff around.

Went silver pins with the brass collars on the Henckels because the scales have silver and brass and Matt's scales were pinned the same.

All turned-up good, I think!

Nice work Tom! Those came out real nice. God shine and nice looking peens. Some day my peens will look half as good as yours.

The home remedy thing for headlights can be brake fluid but it turn even worse after a few days. Toothpaist works too but its just like buying the kits. You buff it on and scratch the hell out of it, then polish it back out with a lot of elbow grease. I d have one of those Miguire kits. It works, but your back to rubbing and buffng and taping around the light. Cant they make an easy way. :shrug:

I think some good wax helps. Basically the plastic degrades after ten years or so.
The Chinese are making some nice cheap replacements I have found. :rofl2:

I this true?

I've been looking for the video that I saw but to no avail. One thing I remember them saying was that the factory spray on clear coat with the UV protection had broken down which was a big part of the haze coating and after their process (basically really high grit sanding then polishing) they used a spray on clear coat with UV protection in it.

IF I had a rig with the plastic headlights and they needed refinished I think that after I'd have sanded and polished them I'd have a body shop spray some PPG clear coat as it's top notch/well back in the day it was so I would presume that their products are still top of the line.

The coating makes sense but what I read seemed like a lot of advertising....

I don't believe everything I read on the net!:D

I have tried clear coat. Makes things last longer.
Put some Liquid Glass on the daughter's last month after buffing them. They were like...Yellow!

I worked as a mechanic through college and a bit after; my understanding is this is true. Factory replacements will stay clear much longer. That being said, some fine plastic polish and a little elbow grease is significantly less expensive. So, I just re-polish, every year or so. A power buffer saves some elbow grease. If you can garage or cover your car you'll extend the time between polishing. If you really want to go cheap, tooth paste works pretty good. Just doesn't last long.
