Martin the older we all get the more we feel like that part. "Get off my lawn!!!!"
Well ran a few razors over the tones to bring them back into fine sharpness.
This was caused by one of them slipping into the sink and putting a chip in the edge. Had to take it down to 1000 and start all over setting the bevel and going up the run of 4000, 8000 and then the 12k Nani stone.
The other 3 got the Nani as well then onto the Lipshaw.
Bridle, Roo then the Tony Miller fast leather. 100x on each step with each razor.
So my morning was kinda full, would have been done a little quicker but the youngins need some attention too.
Hope everyone is having an enjoyable Saturday
Well, I've been surfing the net looking at new razors, everywhere from Germany, US, England.... Everywhere, which means instead of buying new, I need to fix up a nice blade I already have. Almost hit the buy button on a few things that I just don't need.
I think it's time to start on this baby. A Boker Unrivalled I've had for a bit, and probably should have started working on a while ago. Think I'll start taking this rare beauty apart tonight and try and get all the rust removed. Mad Mike, I might be talking to you about getting this one re-gold washed over the blade etch. Expect a PM in the coming weeks.

Had some free time today so pulled two razors out of the 'to do' box. Ones a nice 5/8 robeson shuredge 1585 and the others a 6/8 ... well... im not really sure. Anyone ever see this house-fly logo before? Other side says: william bieser phila pa. No jumps. Wonder what its age might be.
Going to mess around with a new coticule and translucent ark tomorrow.

Be happy to help Andrew.
Give me a reason to order some more gold solution, maybe some black chrome this time as well, as I was wondering how it might look on a tang or two.
Packed off the misses safely to her cousins in the desert so been sitting in my track pants, drinking bourbon and playing with the router.

Just crude passes in some scrap ash flooring to get a feel for the things range and capabilities in different materials for now.
A bit of a rabbit hole of its own this whole rendering, and digital conversion process is going to be. But hey, I didn't have any other projects on the go 'cept for this here script project for Tuzi and from that will come a whole bunch of other ideas.
Cheers men!

Cool! Is this thing going to carry a stronger laser as well, Mike?
I can see some blade etches coming!
I built it with a bigger carrier in mind so it should be able to hold a 15watt laser head, when the time comes. Re-etches should be possible in black, or maybe the mask removal prior to gold dipping..
Sitting in front of a computer screen running code isn't as immediately satisfying as turning on the lathe by hand, that's for certain.. Hehe. My ass gets sore.
So... the epoxy on that bakelite didn't come out beautiful -- it had a couple of voids in it; but I surely thought it was holding. Here it is when I slopped it on to fill the void.
Attachment 260325
And here it is after shaping -- you can see it's ugly, but I thought it was holding.
Attachment 260326
And here it is after peening nice and tight, and opening up to check the fit:

:gaah:
So Tom, all I've managed to do is confirm what you already knew and said: hard to find anything that will bond to bakelite!
If you PM me your address I will mail it out to you Monday...
Pity about your repair. Bakelite is a bear no doubt, specially on the pivot end. It can be done. Under supports such as toothpicks, shims and rougher mating surfaces, as well as stronger epoxies all are options.
Tom's always a safe bet too!
Good luck!
Got the G.D. finished! Got rid of the scratches I didn't like and put a nice bevel on it too. Time to give it a try. Crossing my finger.Attachment 260391Attachment 260392
Nice Truck, Ha,Ty
I looks better with those scratches removed. Let us know how the shave goes.
Sure will. Thanks.
Today I finished my above the bench storage system, which I found in the book "American Woodworker, How to Make Workbenches & Shop Storage Solutions".

Now that's pretty slick.!!
I really like your bench! :tu
However I don't see a hole for a Holdfast.
Maybe you can get down to Charlies and make one and then make a hole for it :y
For those that don't know what a Holdfast is, here's an old video about them and how to forge them.

A row or two of correct size holes for bench dogs and holdfast will make this workbench very user friendly. Nice work, from personal experience the bottom row of storage on the wall will eventually get in the way.
Finally got a chance to finish this Wade & Butcher today. It was in pretty rough shape to begin with, and she's still not all that pretty, but she's got a nice shape. It had deep rust on the tang and some on the blade as well. It did all I could with it to bring it back into service. Here it is in a test fitting, the lead wedge still needs to be trimmed down.

Then I got the scales smoothed and polished and put it together...

It wasn't too hard to get a good edge on it, finished with one of my best coticules. Couldn't wait until morning to try it so I just had a shave with it tonight. It was my first time shaving with anything over 8/8 and it had my full attention for sure. Used a little Wool Fat and what a wonderful shave! One of the smoothest, closest and most comfortable I've had. Plus, you can fit a lot of lather on that blade before needing to clear it, that's for sure.
Indeed Tuzi nice work, big razors hold lots of lather, look good my friend comparing to how it started, Enjoy!
OK, Showered and shaved. I have to say that I really liked the fact that the blade is now 2.5 inches long. Seemed to be a bit more nimble. Getting in places easier. I really didn't think that 1/2 a inch would make much difference , but it really did. As far as the sharpness of my honing, I did a fine job if I say so myself. Now when I touch the edge (i know, I shouldn't touch a finished edge but I do being new) the toe didn't feel as sharp and the rest of the edge. Definitely not dull, just not as sharp but this made no difference when shaving. I find I use the heal more than the toe having a Goatee. Trimming and such.
So I also understand that the G.D. wont hold an edge as long as a vintage razor but this is not the reason for having it. I wanted something I could customize and I wasn't going to do it to a vintage. It will go into the rotation but my rotation is all my razors so with 27 razors now, It wont get used too much. ha.
Thanks to all for putting up with me and my G.D. I know some folks hate them and other could care less, but it was a good experiment for me. I enjoyed grinding away the metal. Getting to know how had this kind of steel is. and I got another pretty razor now!
Very nice work on that W&B Tuzi. Shes a biggie and I don't think she looks too bad. Its got history!
I like that razor, Tuzi! Not overdone...Just right! :tu
Great work in here tonight fellas :tu
That is a nice workbench and the tool storage is very slick
Great job on the FBU W&B Tuzi. You might get hooked on the BIG blades now :D
Jerry the GD looks real good and glad to hear the shave went well. I understand the use of the heel more with a gotee'
Super,, You,ve Come Along Ways,, Been A Great Journey To Follow,,Put It In A Frame When No Longer In Rotation And Say I Did That,, Keep Up The Great Work My Friend,, Ty
I'll quote this and hopefully the pics will tag along with it. If they don't, check out page 835, post number 8346 to see what Tuzi was dealing with from the beginning. Like I've said in the past Tuzi, everything you touch seems to turn to gold. Excellent, excellent work my friend!!
Am I seeing brown in those horn scales??
Thanks for the compliments and all the support given here guys! Keeps ya going when things get challenging.
@Harrywally, the horn is black, I think there may be some reflection of something in the workshop showing up in the polished surface.
I see you use Paul sharpening system as well, me to.
I finally got the horn I ordered from England last week, so I took the Greaves apart.

It only had one set of washers on it but I managed to save them. Looks like the inner ones might be steel? There's what looks like rust on them, though the pin is very definitely brass and so are the outside washers.
Attachment 260412
Heavens to Betsy, after a little sanding looks like the pitting turns out to be really, really deep especially on the back side.
Attachment 260413
Here is as cleaned up as I am likely to get this blade. The pits go down to the bevel, but it's a true wedge so I'm not worried.

Got to make me some scales. Tuned up my bandsaw.
Excellent observation, Andrew!
I wish we could copy and paste a pic like we used to be able to do as the remove format button worked!
Anyhoo...a fairly dramatic before and after! If I may?
