Thanks. Do you think it is something fixable by honing, grinding or reseting the bevel? Obviously is hard to say for sure without seeing it in person. I dont need it to be perfect, but would like to be able to shave with it once in a while. Its really more of a project, Im a proud Aussie and just liked the idea of getting the Platypus and adding Platypus wood scales, as Im guessing hasn't been done before.

I'm always optimistic and willing to take on razors in much much worse condition than this. I'm confident it will be fine - even polishing will likely remove a lot of that staining but it's hard to tell from the photos. Sometimes rust hardly appears in photos; other times it looks much worse that it is, but to my eye this looks easily restorable to shave ready.

Andrew, you should look at this link and then (possibly) contact the vendor.
I bought this same Platypus (last December) from the same vendor and he's now using the same pics again.

Substance, here's my original post dealing with the two razors I bought off this vendor.

Everything was as described, was a pleasure to deal with and if any more razors are offered by this vendor,
(and I'm interested) I will be bidding. I believe this photo mix-up to be an honest mistake, as mentioned by
several people. You never know, maybe there is another Platypus and vendor uploaded old pics by mistake

Ive been at the polish for a few hours (brasso) and has come up alright so far (needs more work with some fine sandpaper) but at least now I can getter a better idea of the blade quality...

Im going to try darkening the etching with vinegar, then bring to mirror finish with fine sandpaper + polish. There are a couple of scratches though Im not sure I will be able to get out without damaging the etching.

Have bought some Australian Eucalyptus Platypus wood (fitting I thought) in both cross grain and burl, and need to find someone able to make one piece scales to attach.

I haven't worked on the back of the blade nearly as much as the front, as I figure I can be more aggressive with that side once I get some sandpapers etc.

That is a nice project razor. I'm doing my first one now as well. Check out Lewis Razors on Youtube. He has a couple great videos on making scales and pinning procedures. I'm still working on mine but it is shaping up well. Waiting on supplies for the pinning. Good luck!
