Look at razors, in person if possible or in the galleries if not. Measure what you can, or look to approximate proportions if you can't. And of course, trial and error will play a role. But, as things go, scales are easy to re-do if they don't come out right the first time or if you get better down the road.

And use a wedge, not a spacer. It makes a huge difference.

Are there average measurements/ angles that the wedge should be? Or does it just need to be angled to spread the scales a bit?

Usually the width of the wedge will determine how far the razor will sit in the scales. As for the angle it usually doesn't take much of an angle, just enough so the scales will flex when opening and closing. It will provide over all strength and stability to the scales.

That's really good to know, I didn't realize the wedge impacts where the blade sits.

A proper wedge impacts alot in any re-scale,Use a wedge, not a spacer like so many novices do.
