Help please with a cracked W&B
Well its been a while since i have been seen around here so to those i usually chat with im sorry but im back now
So i will get right to it, I picked a very nice looking wade and butcher but after getting it home and lightly taking the rust off it i found a bad crack so what do i do? I go's all the way through the blade and is close to the heal. Can this razor be saved, do you think i can still hone it and shave with it or am i going to have to grind out the heel and make something that is not a wade and butcher? Any thought would be great and ways you have handled this if it has happened to you. I did want to sell the razor after i did a restore but i cant sell a cracked blade to someone. This really sucks as it was such a nice looking blade.

To truly save it from possible further damage it would need to ground.
Here is a Torrey I did with a very similar crack.
It is just Whisker Whacking
Relax and Enjoy!

Thanked: 3227Unfortunately I don't think there is anyway to save the razor and retain it's present form. It might be savable but not without drastic surgery and I would not hone it and use it with a crack in it. These things do happen when dealing with old razors not that it's any consolation when it happens to you personally. It has happened to me twice so far.

Thanked: 375You need a mini welder to fix that, anneal it, weld it, grind it, temper (I have no idea what I'm talking about)....Seriously, I think I would leave it as is, mount it in a nice frame since it's an FBU and hang it on the wall in the shave Den.
Other wise I have the exact blade and could use the scales - do you know if it was an "organ donor"? sorry long night at work I'm in desperate need of sleep.................CHRIS

Trimmy, you can have the scales if you like, i think they are shot and about to fall into 12 or more parts but have at it
Thats a bummer that no one has come up with a way to fix this sort of thing yet? I have been toying with the idea of grinding it out and in fact taking a bit further up the blade to make a short wide blade like a Japaneses razor? I mean if i cant save it why not try to go all out, What do you think??

Thanked: 375Really I was just messing with you.........it's what happens when you work 12 hours on night shift with no one to talk to.....
I really think that you should mount it in a frame. I've only ever came across one FBU ever (it's identical to yours hopefully minus the crack).
Once you grind it out you can't take it back. It's to bad no one has a way to fix it. I talked to a Barber once that told me when a razor has a chip it's no good and should be scraped. I looked at him in disbelief.........we all would hone it out today.
If you leave it alone, in time maybe someone will figure out a fix........it's not like they're being made like this anymore, that is with the FBU markCHRIS
