    Default CA over tung oil

Has anyone tried doing a CA finish on top of a piece that's been treated with tung oil? I've done a test patch, but I'm concerned about whether the combination will start bubbling or burst into flame or turn funny colors over time

CA over tung oil? - Woodworking Talk - Woodworkers Forum

Seems it is popular for pens or at least close to it

Thanks, I should have done some googling. I'm locked in combat with some wenge scales that just won't cooperate. I've now given them a little oil, and pretty soon I'll be able to decide whether to try CA again (fourth attempt) or burn these scales in a big fire.

Ok, the tung oil thing worked like a charm. I applied a couple of thin coats of oil, let them dry overnight, applied some CA, and I'm pleased with the results. I think this is definitely the way to go on darker, large-grained woods like wenge.

Tung oil should only be applied one thin coat every couple of days, as it take a while to dry. You'll find out if you rushed it too much, it will turn milky white.
One time, in band camp, I shaved with a Gold Dollar razor.

I used the Formby stuff, which apparently has drying agents and other things that the woodworking purists despise. The instructions on the bottle say 12 hours between coats.

So far (a week and a half) everything looks fine. I'll keep a weather eye on the scales for any discoloration. I'm planning to cut a wedge and pin the razor this weekend, so pics should be forthcoming.

I'm about to cut some purpleheart scales for another razor which will serve as tung-oil experiment #2.
