Default Cleaning up some bone scales...

I'm looking for some advice on getting rid of some red spots on a set of old bone scales.

I do not mind the scales showing some age, but I do NOT like the red staining. I have hand sanded them with the micro mesh progression and this is how they stand now. Would some hydrogen peroxide whiten the scales / clean them up? Any tips are appreciated.

I'm sure peroxide would clean it up. After reading about how hard it is to dye bone, I am not sure that you wouldn't have to resort to some fairly high percentage, soaking for a long time and then wind up with WHITE scales by immersing the whole scale or else a white blotches if you tried to spot it.

I use 30% (Chem Guard clarifier, pool chemical) sometimes for work and it WILL BURN you right now if you get any on your skin. Downside is it comes in gallons at $30+. You could try the highest volume rating that the local beauty supply sells for bleaching hair.

Or as a last resort, concentrate your own by boiling "antiseptic" grade down. If you go that route, do the math to ensure you do not get it too concentrated. I would hesitate to go beyond 40%. High concentrations (used as rocket fuel oxidizer, check historical reference to German WWII rocketry programs) will literally burn you to death!!!

Try whitening toothpaste and a toothbrush. It has worked for me in the past. There are tooth whitener solutions offered at stores and that may help also. who knows, a false teeth cleaner might be the catz meow?

Thanks for the tip. Will go to my local "Sallys" salon supply store today and see what I can find.
