African and Asian elephants are both listed in Appendix 1 to CITES. I can't imagine bone would be treated any differently to ivory. In other words, you can't sell the stuff unless your sources are certifiably old, with a full chain of custody provenance. Other opinions are welcome; I don't claim to be an authority.

Thanked: 3That's is correct was long as I have a letter from the farmer where the elephant was saluted and hunting permit number that for raw material. But if it made in to some thing it's a finished product and that's a different story.

I've discovered that some African countries have downlisted the elephant to Appendix 2 of CITES and that some very restricted exports have been allowed in the last 10 or 12 years - only to China and Japan as far as I can tell. The trade is still pretty disreputable and Asian elephants remain on the banned list. As for the current state of the trade in the US, I defer to American members who are in a position to know to contribute to this discussion.

Ryan, Where are you located? Please update your profile to display that...
And to think we were concerned about difficulty of finding cow and giraffe bone for razors. Is elephant bone widely available or is this going to turn into a search for the holy grail? The easy road is rarely rewarding.

Thanked: 3I live in South Africa and my dad is a professional hunter and I know there is an elephant circuses from the end of last year on the farm from a hunt. And just looking for an exotic alternative to the wood on my razor at the moment.
