Very informative thread gentlemen! As I am researching hones to set myself up for beginner honing, I'm coming close to making a desicion. I wish I could afford to stack up a set all at once but not likely! I have a few questions myself, #1- how is the chosera different from the naniwa1000? #2-do the naniwa stones all come attached to bases (except the 5000/8000) or can you get them without? #3 which DMT do you recommend for lapping? It will be a while I think so I want to get my initial lineup picked out. Thank you,
    Ryan.

If you can take the bite the Chosera is the crème da le crème for the 1k, the king or SS will do the trick though.
with a little search all of the Naniwa SS line is available without the base and thicker, however unless you are honing for a profession I don't believe the extra stone will do you much good for the extra cost.

The DMT8C/325 grit is the standard DMT for lapping or the Atoma 400.

As far as the difference the Chosera is harder, gives a different feed back, and is faster over all from my experience. I have both + the king and use them all.

Pfries, thanks for the tips! Timely, concise and full of experience, nice. I asked about the stone without bases because I'm used to using king stones and I will be using them for woodworking tools as well so I'd like to be able to use both sides. I'll check the price difference and see.

On second thought, these stones are apparently not recommended for chisels and as such, no plane irons! Well, that won't really affect my choice, several trusted sources recommend I start with naniwa.

I tend not to agree, chisels I have other stones for, plane Irons I share a few stones.

I got an email notification this morning that my order had shipped as-is.

But(!!), I just received a call from Don @ SRD saying that he had stopped my shipment from going out, and could add the DMT to my order. I called him back immediately and got it done! Excellent! I am very pleased and excited. Kudos to SRD!
