Thanked: 522It is possible that your final pin length was too long. File some of the pin above the washer and peen a bit more. If that tightens it, that was the problem. If not, I would repin it.

Thanked: 13249How many times did you practice peening using Popsicle Sticks or old busted scales before trying it on your good razors ????

Thanked: 3164Same sort of thing once happened to me - I read a book about chess, but when I played a game I lost. Must have been something wrong with the book...
Seriously though, when I was a kid I used to go to work with my old man in the holidays. He had me digging trenches and manholes in the back garden for weeks so that I got some practice before he unleashed me on the real thing. Practice makes perfect.
Didn't help much when I thought about the other kids playing at home while I drove a tandem roller over steaming hot rolled asphalt, though!

Neil

Thanked: 9I filed the heads down and peened a bit more which tightened the scales up nicely. I will probably take the whole thing apart and trim a little closer next time. I also think the dimple I drilled in the peening block is a bit too deep. I have tightened the pins on a few of my razors but this is the first complete assembly. Also my first set of scales. I have a bit of experience peening from making old english style finishing planes so I an not uncomfortable with this task. I will take some pictures when I get the whole thing done but that might be a few days. Thanks again for all the great advise.

Thanked: 2027Glad it all worked out.For me I find it better not to have a dimple in my block,I see no need for it.

Learning From Dad
When I was a kid, on some weekends, my dad used to take me to an American Legion, a bar for veterans. Strangely, I learned a lot in that bar and the area around it.....nobody ever mentioned straight razors though, in fact, I don't recall anyone ever talking about shaving. I did learn what a mantra was though, Dad had one: Gimme another "Cah-lings" in the Quincy MA accent he never lost.
