    Default Mahagoney wood for scales?

I have a piece of mahagoney wood that is approximately 1x12x18 long that is cut in the shape of a plank. It seems to be an extremely light piece of wood. Would this wood be appropriate for making scales? If it is, I would be glad to send it to someone for free. I may have to cut it in half to get it into a flat rate container. Just let me know what you think please.
