Electric motor advice.
Been thinking of buying a used electric motor, so that I can convert it to a polisher, but I am unsure as to what I should be looking for? I would like something that I can use for polishing and maybe even attach a wheel/stone. Can the polishers out there please give me some advice on what HP? And what RPM?
ThanksA Leopard never changes it spots....fact!

Thanked: 44I have used motors from clothes dryers before trashing it. You can change the rpm with pulleys. Some people will say around 1700 rpm, others will say 3500 rpm.
If you look you can find motors in all kinds of stuffAmateurs built the ark. Professionals built the Titanic!

Thanked: 170I'd suggest looking for a 1750rpm motor. For polishing you will never need more than that, and if you want to slow it down, you can use a step pulley. As far as horse power, I go with more is better. You don't always need it, but it is there when you do. 1hp should be plenty for a buffer. If you put it on a belt grinder, 2+ IMHO. Good luck with your search. I found a great 3hp 3 phase used motor for my belt grinder.

Three phase 415v are easy to come by however. Converting them to single phase. Is relatively. Simple. Basically it needs to be configured to delta not star. Then a capacitor across L1 and L2 then your feed across L2 and L3 the size of the capacitor is dependant on the kw of the motor

Thanked: 170My 3 phase is hooked up to a phase converter speed control - they work great for that application. Thanks for the info on converting to single phase.
