Thread: Should one seal camel bone scales?

Hello Gents.
I was wondering about the use of camel bones being used as scales. I hope there are no import things that one has to worry about. If one were to use camel bones for a set of scales, would they need to be sealed with anything after being made for the razor? I have never thought about any of this before, but would most people have a weird feeling by using camel bone? It just seems a little odd to me, and I have no idea why. I guess just thinking about the ugly critters . This shaving thing is really great. A lot of different things open up after getting into this. I would really love to restore a razor, so would anyone out there suggest using camel bone? My research has shown that it is supposed to be easy to work with. As usual, all criticizing, opinions, advice and suggestions are appreciated.

Camel bone is used in part because of it's density. The more porous bones tend to have pockets in them that run the length of the bones. They give the tiny dot effect when they are old, or are sometimes stained that way on purpose. Bone of all types could be sealed any number of ways. A good wax or CA glue comes to mind the fastest. It would protect them from rot and staining to a certain extent. They do make quite nice scales.

I've never used camel bone but you can buy from the States through ebay, so no perceived import probs

All bone scales look better when polished, and I'm sure someone will be along soon to point you in the right direction

A lot of bone that is imported is stabilized because the process kills any bacteria. I got a bunch of giraffe bone and other bone/horn from giraffebone.com. All of the bone was already stabilized. I may try some scales; I have some whole zebra leg bones that didn't work out like I was hoping for kitchen knife handles, but they may work for razor scales!

No need to seal Camel Bone.For whatever reason Camel do's not have the pourous structure most bone has (Halversian canals)
It is very dense and hard,polishes like Ivory.I would just wax it after polishing with white compound.
