Wade and Butcher's Celebrated Razor.
So I picked this razor up at an antique store that never fails me for razors. I got it for $15. The scales are pretty beat up and the edge of the blade can actually be felt when it is closed. There is a lot of patina on it but not too bad on the pitting. The edge was surprisingly clean all the way through. I took it home and honed it up immediately and it actually went really quickly. I was very surprised that it took an edge that well and easily. I am going to do a full restore polishing up the blade and replacing the scales. I usually like to keep the patina if it isn't too bad but I felt like doing something different as it doesn't seem to have too bad of pitting. Like I said the scales are pretty shot so I am going to redo them in cola de pavo burl. I am not familiar with this wood but the figure is nice and I have had two pieces laying around for quite a while. I would really like to engrave the wood just like how the original scales are but we'll see how that goes. In the letters, when its wet it looks like there was a gold paint or something in there. Does anyone know if this was the case or am I just seeing things. Any ways I already popped the scales and started on sanding the blade.
Well I feel like this will be a long project for me as I don't really have all the time nor the tools to complete these projects in a timely manner. Anyways I will keep you guys updated with my results as they come. Oh yeah as for the shave, it was phenomenal. And here's the pics, sorry they are upside down. I don't know why my computer does this. They are right side up until I upload them

Nice find. It's cool to hear that the honing went smoothly and the shave was great. Congrats!

Thanked: 4828I can see that the new scales will set it up nicely, however the old ones are cool too. It would be nice to save them and repair them for a future project.
It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!

I really wanted to keep the scales but the blade edge would poke through on the bottom where there are big chunks missing and I already cut myself because of that issue. But I am keeping the lead wedge. Also I am going to try and either get the "WADE & BUTCHER'S CELEBRATED RAZOR" inlaid with gold in the same font as the originals.
This antique store always has decent razors that usually only need a good honing and they are usually $15. The only time they are more is when they have a box with them. I got a Dubl Duck Satin edge for 15 and a fredrick reynolds for 30 with a box. I got a couple of others from them for 15 as well. Theres a barber shop across the street and the barber there is an old guy and I think he's the supplier but they won't tell me who it is.
