Heel Chipped family Heirloom!
So I will try an keep this short. Need advice from the experts on repair. My soon to be inlaws came up this weekend an surprised me with a J.A. Henckels Twin works. It was swmbo's grandfathers. I was stunned until I opened it. It has a decent chip out of the heel. No noticeable cracks. Original scales are slightly warped but savable. I think the blade would clean up nice. Just worried about how small it will be after the chip an bevel are done. The plus side is the shoulderless grind. Wont have to worry about getting into a stabilizer. Here are a few bad pics. What do yall think? Save it or just keep it as a wall hanger?
In case the glare is to bad, the scales read " Vanadium Alloys Steel Company" & "Red Cut Superior""The black smoke is just lost power"

I say hone it down.
I have a razor that i gave my son that is a 4/8.
That thing shaves like a BEAST!

I would say if you decide to hone the chip out leave the width as is up until shortly before the chip. You couldn't get away with that if it wasn't shoulderless, but it is, and you can. Not sure how it would look aesthetically, but it is worth a try. You can always take more off if you want a uniform profile.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

The other possibility is a heel-out. I've done it with a dremel and all went pretty well.
Best advice, of course, is don't act rashly. Aka, don't do a test shave.

Radius the heel from the chip to the tang.
The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.
