CA finish 1st time
Thanks to all of you on this forum I decided to try a CA finish, WOW this stuff works good on small scale projects. I finish wood for a living and was skeptical of CA but decided to try it after seeing everybody elses results.
The wood is maple, the blade has "King of all Razors" stamped on one side and "John Bestgen & CO." on the other.
I took pictures of the whole process - I will post them somewhere when I finish labeling them.
Thanks

Wow, coming from someone who does that for a living, it's a strong 'attaboy' for CA. Curious, did you use activator, and if so how? Also, how many coats? thx - John

I did not use any activator. I applied a total of about 12 coats, I lost count. I put on about 3 or 4 coats in an 9 hour timespan.
I am not an expert on CA glue this is my first time coating a complete object with it.
Here is the link to pictures I mentioned about making the scales:

Great dye work. I've never thought of it, but I think I will give it another shot

Nice, I like the dye idea too. I did the same recently with red dye, but in my case it was McCormick food coloring. I diluted 2 water to 1 dye (a few drops of each) then spread it with a q-tip and wiped onto surface with paper towels. Looks about the same as yours, though I suspect yours penetrated the wood deeper.
good work - John

Food dye, that is pretty cool. The food dye will penetrate just as good as any other dye. The only minus is that it is not as fade resistant as dye made for wood. As long as the razor is not left in direct sunlight or bright light it should not fade for long time. I have read of people using hair dye to color wooden instruments. I have a friend that uses shoe dye to color the black piano keys.

Nice post, Charlie!
There's a lot of good information in there for somebody just thinking about getting started in scale making. I'll definitely be re-visiting those pictures again.
Thanks
