Default Recent restores, Rodgers and Schmidt

    A couple of recent restorations.
What do you guys think? Still some pitting, but I didn’t want to take off too much metal.

Top: Joseph Rodgers & Sons (Between 6/8 and 13/16)

    Bottom: P.L.Schmidt 36: Dispatch Razor (13/16).

I love the scales on the Schmidt, in spite of the damage. However, when closed the bottom of the heal of the razor sticks out of the bottom of the scales: Any tricks to deal with this?

    Those sure cleaned up nicely.

I am wondering if the problem with the blade sitting too low at the heel and protruding out the bottom of the scale could be caused by the scales not being original to the razor? I mean they are gorgeous scales but the design/straightness of them reminds me of an earlier period scales when the blade would have been a near wedge which would not sit as low in the scales. OTH I could and likely am wrong in my thinking.

Maybe narrowing the wedge would stop it from sitting too low?

    Very nice work!
A carefully placed third pin that would hold the tang higher might work

I also think the scales might be a lot older than the razor but I'd suggest that you don't modify the scales in any way and instead put them on maybe a 1790-1820s wedge razor.

Yes, my first choice would be not to modify the scales but save them for an older blade too. They survived this far in such nice shape it would be a pity to modify them.

Thanks so much for the helpful advice guys. I think i will keep my eyes open for a nice old wedge to put in them. I'd assumed they were original scales but now you say they might be earlier it makes more sense why the heel sticks out.
