Found new Celluloid for scales. Small problem.....
So.. I got interested in trying to find celluloid replacement for razors. They seem to sell out quickly on websites so the search went to suppliers.

The problem is that you need to order 150kg of the stuff per order. That's 330 lbs for my Imperical friends. A little over kill even for those of us in the bulk business.
No good....
PS it come in 200+ colors and designsLast edited by CyberShdw; 10-27-2014 at 03:05 AM.

Try this page. Mostly for pen turners but they do have some blanks that are usable for scales. The older I get the more I realize how little I actually know.

American plastics in Matt's post is pretty good supplier for low volume. The price isn't as good as in bulk, but where would even store 500 pounds of celluloid?

Thanked: 4828My guess is it would have to be somewhere cool. The crawl space under my kitchen fits the bill but it is full of cabinet grade wood right now. I would expect that you just need to keep looking. There are a couple of knife supply places and a billiard company that I have seen some cool stuff, but I know what you see and what you can buy sometimes changes when you go to place an order. I have so much stuff already I have deleted all my links that I had for such things. I do like the horn to work with.

It's just something that is appealing to get.
The stuff is hard to work with from my understanding and there is something to be said for tackling a new substance. I have space in the basement, but for the number of razors that I would restore with it I would probably be using the 300 extra pounds to make a bed (also in the basement) or a rocking coffin once the wife finds out.
The pen stock from American plastics is too small and a look at that checkered stock really make me question the quality. No offense but at that price I could get some sweet burls.
I am going to try the "Can you send me a sample 1/2" thick by 6 inch by 4 inch?" route and see what happens. Maybe a hit up some local hacker spaces and see if there is some interest in a group order.--There will be an edit.....wait for it...wait for it... There we go.

Thanked: 13247I have used new "Celluloid" exactly once in all the restores I have done..
I bought it just for Nostalgia sake so eventually I used it on a restore for a customer, two weeks later I was replacing the scales because the New Celluloid was off gassing and had created a frosted layer of light rust over the entire razor..
Whether that was a one time bad effect or not I don't know, but I am not trying it again for the time being..
Stuff was a PITA to work too, it can ignite on a sanding belt if you are not careful

Thanked: 25Masecraft Supply - Online Store
I've gotten Micarta, wood, buffalo horn, G10 and many other supplies from them! Fast shipping! I am local to them, so sometimes I stop by to hand pick pieces or if it's a generic thing, like a half sheet of Micarta and some G10, I will just order it. Otherwise I tend to spend a LOT more than I plan to!
