I always glue one side. I have no idea why.

would that be to stop it sliding around excessively while you try and file it down to size?

I think it had more to do with drilling the wedge. I can't remember why I started doing it but that makes complete sense too. I glue the rough wedge with CA on one side and assemble with screws check that it all fits well. Finish the wedge, remove the blade and final buff the outside of the scales and then pin and hopefully I just have to wax and polish, but have had to repair slipped file marks on occasion.

I learned to glue one side to keep the wedge from moving, especially with one pin. If two pins are used you can do it but it isn't as important.

I have been watching your post here & just want to say that you are doing a great job on these. You have put a lot of time & effort into this but when it is all done, it will be a job well worth it & a job well done! I have been going over some old posts on here, members that have been here a long time, longer than I have & contributed in a very big way but they must have a lot on their plates or they would be on here more. It takes newer members like you who have the determination & help to make this the place what it is for the straight razor enthusiast & also those who are single & double edge razor users.
Keep up the good work my friend. It will pay off in the future!

while shaping them, i did splinter the side of this one. just went in the wrong direction with the file, with too much force because i wasn't paying attention

shaping doesn't seem make a huge difference, it just softens the edges. unshaped on the left and shaped on the right.

Damn, that sucks you splintered one. It really shouldn't have done that. It's never happened to me when filing on one but it might be a difference in the bone i use. I buy my bone off eBay & it is nice bleached white bone. If you have to, you can make a new piece. I broke a piece when making a set for the W&B I made bone scales for when I decided they were still too thick & broke one when punching the pin out. I made another piece & then I made them thinner.

i reckon i should be right to be able to blend it in with the shape of the rest of the scales and the pair. i must have done it along a fault in the bone or something like that. i should have paid more attention to it
