I assume 1 micron wouldn't really leave a scratch pattern, just a slightly duller shine.
I've used 1.0 and 0.5. Either will do unless you are going for perfect mirror. Then the finer the better.

Thanks rolodave. I'll go with with the 1 and .3. I have a Taylors eyewitness that's just begging to have this done to it.

That's so funny, I actually recently tried gun blue on one of my razors. On the directions for the blue it suggested cleaning the surface with another Birchwood and Casey product for degreasing. I didn't have that so I used acetone dipped a q-tip and touched the razor for a millisecond and it was already turning black. It actually threw me off for a second and scared me, thinking I was going to ruin the blade. I sanded it with 2000 grit sand paper and here is the results... Name: Image1470356490.920048.jpg

That's some pretty nice information I will have to try it on one or two of my razors with etching.

Gave it a go and it colored all the pitting too. But it is now at least noticeable. Before you couldn't really read it unless you looked at it hard. Thank Geezer for the help.
