Made some cross cut zebra scales for my W&B, the stock was very thick almost 1/4th inch, and very hard to work with. I had to break out the dremel to break the corners. All and all they looked pretty good.

But the razor wouldnt close all the way, the toe wasn't touching the wedge or anything, so after a couple drinks i decided, that, "what could go wrong if i put a few pounds of pressure on the spine?" Drunk me figured i would be able to figure out where the rub was if i put a little force into it.

All i can say is thank god i didn't damage my Wade and Butcher, its now back in the Beefwood scales i originally made for it.

Or your fingers :<0) You can mix a drink with a straight but never mix a straight with a drink.

Oh believe me, that edge was millimeters way from going right into the pads my my fingers.

But fingers can be reattached, and a vintage W&B is hard to replace.

I've done that. Decided I was going to use a straight one night after a few drinks. Went to a Dr. friends house for what I thought was going to be a needle and thread. Only a butterfly. I now have new rules.

Too bad those didn't work out for you, they are nice to look at.

I've got another set of blanks from the same batch, i could reproduce them, but it was so much work (scales are easy, this particular wood is whats hard)

    Maybe some day.

Well you might get away with it shaving (I wouldn't suggest trying) but if your working on one and start acting like your pulling a small block out of a Nova something is going to get hurt.

SO , did you ever figure out why they wouldn't close ? Now that the smoke has cleared I got to wonderin'

Acutally i didnt there was no rub marks on the scales. All i can figure is that the scales were to thick and they didnt bend enough to accomodate the thick body on my w&b

I think the thickness together with the way the grain is running is your problem here. If you have some more cut in the same way then you might want to try adding a liner such as wenge veneer - where the linear grain will add strength - you will still need to thin the existing stock though.

I've used this successfully on a few razors including one in maple burr where the contrast in colours looks really nice.
