Thread: My first razor damage!

Hi, I am new to SR shaving being under the influence for about a month. I bought a nice Dovo as my first serious razor, although it has not been properly honed the factory edge seems to be ok to my untrained senses.




During a shave the other day I accidentally knocked the blade against the sink which created a small dint in the edge.




My question is will this make a serious difference to my shave and will the dint gradually go away with stropping?

The quick answer. Yes and No respectively. It needs to be honed.

+1 to Splashone's advice: get that sucker honed. The ding will come out easily and your razor will be just fine. But leaving it unattended will probably give you miserable shaves and may also damage your strop. And the strop will not fix the problem. So the little $$ that it will cost to get that fixed will be money well spent.

And don't feel bad. I did *exactly* the same thing with my first razor, and I suspect sink/tap dings are amongst of the most common ways we damage our blades.

Did exactly the same thing during my first few shaves. Let me tell you a chipped edge does not feel nice being dragged across the face. I'll concur with the above get it honed. Its a very common thing man don't sweat it just be aware of where your blade is at all times. That sink could have been your finger. P.S. that's a nice first razor!

Thank you all for your advice, I don't feel quite as bad about the ding now and I will get it honed as soon as possible.

And yet so easy to avoid. Don't put your razor in the sink! There is nothing there that the razor needs...

I'm afraid I'm a 'do as I say not as I do' kind of guy on this front. While I agree that you're 100% correct, I do still rinse my blades in the sink. Carefully. But I'd never advise other do that as the potential to ding the blade is always there.

I rinse also but had made it an art form long ago. Funny thing about habits. I kept wanting to shake my straight and beat it against the sink like I did an old cartridge for a week or 2 as I recall :<0)

+1 on the above, use a sponge to wipe the lather off the blade

I am the cheap one then, i wipe the lather off on the outside of my forearm. My razors never see water, i just strop off the last of the foam on my towel, then give it a quick wipe to catch anything I missed.
