Default Advice on Pin tightening/replacement for MOP scales

Just received a nice razor dressed in carved MOP scales. Original pins are very slender, and is very loose at the pivot.

I have a terrible fear that if I simply choose to tighten the pin, it may expand in diameter instead of the top mushrooming, and as we all know, that will blow out the MOP.

I know some of you guys have done a lot of these. Whats your take? Best to replace the pin? or do you try to tighten them up?
And what special tools/precautions do you take to keep the hammer and anvil safely away from the scales (pins appear flush with the MOP in all other areas)

MOP scales are the most fragile and valuable you will mess with

You need a very Small Headed Hammer to do them really carefully, I use Blue Painters tape around the pin when I do MOP I can't say it really helps but it makes me feel safer so I guess that works hehehe

You have to make a judgement call on the pin, you have to look at it and decide if is can be tightened or if it needs to be replaced, unfortunately this is a call that I wouldn't even attempt making from a pic, usually you hear me say "And the Pic is where" this time I think it might actually confuse you to get opinions from a pic

Sorry but this is a by feel and experience thing you have to work through it

    Good luck

Steve, I have done this on ones with liners: http://straightrazorpalace.com/works...op-liners.html I would be leary of attempting to do them collarless!

    Tom,

I know you have done a lot of these! I was hoping you would chime in!

Glen? Do you agree its safer to go with a collar/washer?

If it is a clean hole, lightly chamfered, it's one thing. Quite another if the previous peen has wobbled and crumbled the pearl under it. Good chance for a crack! JMO
