    for a couple of hones.

I don't like having precious tools and hones just lying around, so I made a couple of boxes. The box for la Veinette is made of beech wood and the one for my Thüringen of walnut. Both treated with boiled linseed oil and sealed with beeswax.

Still haven't decided on how to keep the walnut case closed. Some hasp maybe.

They are very nice boxes! The use of hardwood gives the boxes beauty and style.

Beautiful! I'm like you - I like to have cases for things. I like how you did the free form cutout for your Thuringen

Very nicely done. If I had cases that nice, I would feel the need to make cases for them!

Nice. I too like making boxes. As for the the clasp options you could also consider hidden magnets. The rare earth magnets are quite strong for their size and work well on small boxes.

They look very nice! I hope to do as well eventually. One of our guys, Padre, is going to help me learn the basics starting sometime this week. Wish me luck!

    thanks guys!

I also thought about magnets, would sure look clean. But on the other hand, I hesitate putting strong magnets close to my blades. They could easily get caught, and if not, they would get magnetized. And I imagine magnetized blades would make the honing a mess, with the swarf sticking to the blade. Anyone having suggestions for a small/clean solution, clasping the lid to the bottom?

Are you planning on honing while the stones are in the cases? If so, I see your point about the magnets. But it seems like you're going to mess up those boxes fairly quickly doing that? Maybe I misunderstood...

no you didn't, I plan to use them as stands while honing.

Especially for the Thüringer, which is assymmetric, and since I like honing on the table, the box keeps the honing surface flat (letting the water and the slurry to stay on top).

I agree that water may mess them up if they are not cared for. But wiping them dry after honing (and letting them dry out in the air), and giving them some love with oil and wax once in a while will keep them looking nice.

I think that well used wooden things (like tool handles) gets a fine looking patina when cared for. Sure, they do not look new, and may loose some of the crisp they once had, but they get something else, which for me is equally good.
