I have no idea what was done to this razor.... Just a razor I saw on ebay and was WTH? If done on purpose.... A very interesting look to it.

OK....here is another razor from an eBay listing that just wrapped up....... Ugly too! But maybe fixable? A gamble to find out if can be cleaned up and usable?

Dunno, those types of blades are always a gamble. If what is under the black crud looks like the rest of the blade it may not be too bad. That is if the black crud easily cleans off. The other possible problem is the corrosion along the bevel down to the edge. You may wind up honing a fair amount of metal away to get to good solid steel to set the bevel on. On the plus side looks like fairly even hone wear on the spine.

Would be nice if people kept their blades cleaned up to a degree....... 100 year old shaving scum? lol

I am suspecting that is a crack there from the toe and up the edge of the black blob.

I prefer blades at 2.5" long... and having the last name of Rodgers, I have a certain affinity toward this brand. So it would be tempting to make a shorty out of that!

Looks like "devil's spit" to me and under it will probably look like something like this razor. Granted it could still be made shave ready as long as the pitting doesn't effect the edge.

    Gotta love pitting......

I see some people will "grind out" the pitting and some will leave it......
Both can look nice on a razor. But doesn't leaving the pitting cause problems down the road?
    Isn't there rust still there?

The pitting on that one looks too close to the edge to me. With the hollow grinds you could run out of steel before getting past the rust. Devil's spit is easily identified if you have a loupe, looks good to the naked eye but your face will tell a different story. Spend a bit more and save yourself a lot of grief.

I'll take a nice pitting over an excessive abrasive action anytime
But then again I love old wedges.

Pitting is a form of metal corrosion, so sure, there may be issues : too close to the edge and said edge may chip apart, on the thinner section of a hollow blade it can cause a fragility in the whole razor etc.

But AFAIK a pitted blade will not degrade as long as you take good care of it

Beautiful is important, but when all is said and done, you will always be faithful to a good shaver while a bad one may detter you from ever trying again. Judge with your skin, not your eyes.
