Cast scales photos
Several members asked me to post some pictures of the cast scales that I make,so here they are, also some pictures of blades ready for scales.I make the scales using 3 different materials ,depending on the requirements. The clear,or very pale translucent are the only ones requireing vacume degassing. All these scales are very easy to make, and very inexpensive ,if you can make 30 to 40 at a time. All the razors shown are shave ready except for the big 1837 Greaves, the egde is set on it but it is not final honed for shaving.
Best regards Gary

Thanked: 9The scales look great - I wonder how I never heard about you making these... Do you make them just for yourself or sell (with or without blades)? I don't think I have ever seen you sell a razor but maybe I missed this too
Cheers

I am amazed at what high level of profession you have made those scales!
At first sight they truly look great.
The blades look fantastic, too!
There would be a lot of happy wet-shavers in Germany if those came to be offered to buy, I bet.
Is it a secret or may I ask what kind of material you use for the production?

Wow! Those are beautiful. Those are the kind of scales that I would like to own, or make someday.
What is the casting material?

I can make them for you if you want, however,I dont do them with final sanding and finish. If you want them you will have to do the final sanding and polishing(takes around 30 minutes, and is very easy to do)I will send you the blanks finished to 600 grit ,as they come off the belt sander, I will also drill the pivot pin hole, and send you a piece of wedge material.you will need to give me the pivot pin to point dimension, and razor width ,and color.I can also send some pivot pins and washers if you dont have them.I just charge postage for them,if you want some e mail me at [email protected],I will be casting 30,or 40 on Friday.I can also give you instructions on how to make them if anyone is interested.

Thanked: 0Incredible work. Are any of those razors or blades for sale or is that your personal stash? Any advice for someone just getting into restoration? I have several razors that I'm trying to get cleaned up that could use a new set of scales, but so far I've been concentrating on the blades, de-rusting, sharpening, etc.

Thanked: 1Very cool! Good work!
Yep, it brings me back to the days of my youth, 30 years ago when I worked for a plastic prototyping company, and we cast, fabricated, & machined plastic parts.
I used to make the original models from clay or plastic or both, make silicone and/or urethane rubber molds, and then we would cast parts in epoxy, polyester, or acrylic plastics.
We would then machine, fabricate, and polish up the parts afterwards...
I used to work on all the machines... grinders, buffers, lathes, milling machines, drill press, etc.. as well has hand tools like flex-shaft for fine work...
I made everything from aerospace parts, medical EQ parts, to cosmetic container prototypes, to costume jewelry, etc.. to fine art reproductions, historical egyptain, greco-roman, antique reproductions and dinosaur fossil remains!!!! and the list went on and on... everyday there was something new and different to make.. I remember making plastic cheeses!
Repro and replacement scale making would be a "natural" application for a small home, attic, kitchen, basement, garge type plastics shop...
The only thing that held us back in the old days were the fumes given off by the curing plastics... We walked around with heavy duty safety masks and clothing and gloves...
I've been informed that the plastics today are much better, safer & easier to make and use, less toxic and even easier to machine, fabricate, & finish as well as STRONGER and more stable as well!
Let's definitely link up! I'd like to talk to you more about this!!!!
