Are you doing it by hand or by wheel? If by hand, you'll need to work yourself up through the W/D grits to about 2500gt. Then move to a Polish. Though the same is true for the wheel, you may be able to stop the W/D at around 1500gt
Because I don't have the right compound I use SS metal Polish on both the blade and scale work, but some vets may chim in later. Hope this helps

hmmmmm-----TRIED waxing with an old Johnson furniture wax by hand, helped some.Later tried greaseless compound stick at 800 grit that's the highest I have except for a tube of plastic grit compound on a buffer.Problem is you really have to watch the r.p.m's or will burn the scaleNeed a magic wax, cannot seem to find such higher grits that are affordable Thank you.

Most home stores sell packs up to 1k grit and auto stores up to 2 or 3k. and most have single sheets available.

There are some plastic polishes that work great on most scales. I believe one of the companies is called Novus. They have an eBay store. You can also check at auto detail shops and auto supply shops for headlight polishing kits. For the most part if you clean them well with 000 steel wool and WD-40, then sand out any scratches ending that 2000 grit wet, depending on what you are sanding it can be water or WD-40, THEN BACK TO THE 0000 steel wool with mothers, and then just mother. This process works fairly well but I have to say the guys that use the plastic polishes after that have some pretty high gloss finishes.

you should try hand sanding with progression( 320-2k depending on finish) then polish. most of these w/d sandpapers are available at your local hardware stores, atleast up to 1k grit

Ace Hardware or True Value usually have a good selection of high grit Wet/dry sandpaper up to 2500.

Plastics, wood, G10, CF all can be done with
400/600/1500 whet dry, then this stuff
MICRO MESH SANDING SHEETS INTRODUCTORY WOOD KIT - Sandpaper Sheets - Amazon.com

I have had mine for about 4 years now and is still going.

For best results it is always if you can buff the scales after the hand finishing.
