Thanx for the replies & suggestions guys. I knew about Shoe Goo but didn't know Sugru

Yes the rust happened over a long time. This is one of Iwasaki's early works. Those that know will see the stamps are different to today's ones.

It is not my razor. I am attempting to restore it for someone. It's quite worn so it is a challenge.

The owner can decide for himself whether to re wrap or not.
My razors are unwrapped & that works for me. The thin tang allows me the control I like with these .
Water is not an issue & the tang gets oiled as well post use.

Maybe bead blast the rusted part to a satin or textured stippled finish. Beautiful steel, I wouldn’t wrap the handle either. It’s the owner’s prerogative.

Yeah, sounds good but I don't have the gear & am scared that a shop would give such a valuable razor to an apprentice to work on
I've already cut & then brass brushed most of the rust off. Luckily, it came off quite easily.
I will give it a dip in Oxalic to neutralise the rest & darken the tang.

A tool meant to be used. I think that the structural value of the handle has not been compromised.

I am just thinking but would cleaning it again before re wrapping it actually do more harm than good by exposing clean new metal to reoxidize and remove the protective coating?

    Correct

No rust removal is always better but the black forged coating has not suffered greatly in the process so it's not bare metal.

    Hello to All,

I use clear nail polish on my kamisori (I use 'rubber' tubing as a grip), and have found that it works very well.

I remove the 'grip' when I re-hone, and so far (touch wood), have found no corrosion. The nail polish is easy to remove and re-apply if needed.

    Have fun

    Best regards

    Russ

This is Kousuke Iwasaki Tamahagane, rare and one of the best kamisori ever made. In my opinion would be shame to wrap it.
Would like to see it after restoration, omote side too.
    Thx for sharing this beauty

Yes indeed it is. The 4th segment of ingot # 345 according to the stamps on the tang. He made about 1800, I think.
He made 4 or so razors per ingot.

Omote is quite worn. Still working on it.
