Thanked: 101Alumilite Casting Equipment
I went to a garage sale & picked up a Basic Plastic casting kit for $3.00. Sold at Hobby Lobby for almost $30.00. Has anyone tried this to cast scales for razors before? Looks pretty cool. I was thinking of trying to cast some slightly over size scales I could trim to fit what ever the blade called for size wise. I will keep you posted & try to get some pictures on here.

That sounds like it could have more than one application..
If you could cast a section of a blade and have a sand paper backing that would match perfectly the hollow curve the blade...? Just a thought.
Maybe the molding could be used and another material used for scales?
I bought some molding materials to take casts of some great celluloid scales I've got, maybe this one you have is as good for a better price.. at hobby lobby, of course the price you got was a great deal.
Thanks for the tip.“You must unlearn what you have learned.”

Thanked: 101I need to make some scales for an old Wade & Butcher near wedge. The blade is around 860 thousandths at it's widest.
The blade has no "Made in England on it. Just Wade & Butcher on the first line & Sheffield on the second with the arrow & Maltese cross & a circle with.
some figure in it on the other end. I would like to try & get them as close to original shape as possible.
Thanx, Slawman

Long time ago a member called traveler cast scales. The one thing I remember was he used a vacuum chamber to make sure no air bubbels got trapped during curing process.

Vacuum chamber... I'm just gonna have to start researching i know.. but is that also used in stabilizing?
I've thought about ways to prevent bubbles.
With thinly cut burl and thin CA I've used a needle to remove bubbles.. thought about a vibrating device of sorts. Maybe silly but just a thought.
Now I'm really curious about vacuum chambers!“You must unlearn what you have learned.”
