Cover the etching with nail polish.

    Sand away.

    Repeat steps as needed.

Yes, +1 on the pics! If the etching is dark and you start with 1k grit paper the etch will hold up ok. If the blade is in bad shape and will need more work you need to cover it as suggested above.

If your just polishing, tape the blade with satin finish scotch tape
( its easier to see for the next step)
Using a razor blade, carefully cut around the etching, then remove the tape around the etching and polish with a rag wrapped around the eraser of a "NEW" #2 pencil, the tape typically wont come up with the polish, but still take caution around the tape edges.

WD40 gets the tape and residue off easily.

Tape protection is a good idea. But be careful, if you have a gold etching and rust in between, the tape may remove the gold from the blade when you loosen it. Rust moves between steel and the gold and peels away the gold overlay.
In this case covering the etching by nail polish or a special sealing lacquer is the better idea. This also conserves the etching as far as possible.

What if some one wanted to clean up the etching area?

I have one of those "You lather, i'll shave" W&B .. The whole blade is etching. I was gonna use some 30k paper and see what happens..

    Is that a bad idea?

    Sorry to highjack the thread.

For a clean up I wouldn't use any paper. Just a very soft cloth or polishing wheel, maybe on a dremel with slow revolution and only slight contact to the etching, no force. Maybe a little polishing paste, Flitz is a very good one.
