Thanked: 1Ja henckels #50 scales restoration
I recently cleaned a #50 ja henckels twin works straight razor and unfortunately the polish and cleaner made the black scales brown. I painted them with a permanent black marker and it looks pretty good but I'd rather restore them properly/correctly (if that is possible) Any pointers or suggestions?

Depending on th depth of the discoloration a light sanding may reveal the black again.
The older I get the more I realize how little I actually know.

Sounds like Bakelite type scales. They turn brown from oxidation. I like to wet sand them with 800 grit sand paper. You can really see your progress better when they are wet. I sand until all the brown is gone then buff with rouge or sand up to 2k(or higher) and polish by hand. You can make them look like new again with a little effort.

I agree with BeJay. sanding them until the brown is gone is a good way to do it. I've made some bakelite scales look like new again with this.
Just be carefull if you want to unpin the razors, I've noticed that bakelite isn't as strong as another synthetic material.
