First moderators, I apologize for following this thread with a second called post II after pics. I don't know how to string or ad a post together so my sincere apologies to all.
Hello gentleman, I finally got up the courage to do a full restore on this Baurmann Sohne I bought off the Bay back in December, dirt cheap. It's my first Baurmann and also my first restore, all done by hand because I didn't have any power tools at the time. Even though I've been shaving with a straight now for over six years, this is my first full-on restoration project other than some polishing and buffing scales and blades. I realize it's not very good but I think feedback is an important part in the learning curve. I haven't pinned it yet, will do that tonight or tomorrow morning unless I decide several more coats of finish. Even though it is a classic, I decided to go with maple scales instead of horn. Since the scales were broken off when I purchased it, I decided in order to salvage some of the original horn, that I would make the wedge with a piece of the old horn.
Scales are all uniform at 0.165" width measured with my micrometer. 3/16" = 0.1875" and sanded down in stages from 220 grit to 2000 wet/dry. Finish is 4 coats of MINWAX Polyurethane. I might put a few more coats on. Not sure yet. I have not honed it yet. Once it is all together I will hone with my Naniwa stones 1000, 3000, 5000, 8000, 12000 and a finish up with a few strops on my TI paddle strop treated with DMT 0.5 micron DiaSpray
Pins are 1/16" brass
Internal Tang washers are SS
External washers are Micro-Fastener Flat washer #0 0.065x.125x.017
Following pics are before. Next thread/post will show in progress restoration work.
