Thread: Streaked Honey Horn

Got a slab of streaked honey horn in this morning. The family went shopping in LA so I opted not to go. Sat here listening to the Pechanga Indians having a drum ceremony for some reason on the reservation behind our house. So I decided to go outside, take my tools and proceed to work on this set of scales and enjoy the rhythm. Its big enough to fit a 7/8 or 8/8 blade. I based on my 6/8 TI Spartacus that I have. Im not quite done sanding and buffing. I ran out of time (i.e. the sun is setting and Im losing my light).
So here it is.







So my questions are the following.
When I go to pin it should I go without collars are go with collars?
What should I use for wedge material and what color?

I can invert theses collars and make a similar design.


But then do I go collarless or add different collars on the outside?
Or simply use a brass wedge? Or go with something totally different all together?

Based on your progress, roll a die. Either way it will look good!

If it’s a Sheffield, lead.

Others, white, black horn, glass or maybe some color…

Very nice work so far! I agree with Euclid440 about using lead if its a Sheffield.

The one thing that I really find interesting about this hobby is you are limited only by your imagination as to what you can do! Most of what we turn out here are one of a kind pieces.

Those honey horn scales look cool. I happen to really like the TI style scales. Here is one that Tarkus did on my Joseph Smith & Sons. I opted for oversized decorative collars. Wedge is grey something or other, might be pewter, lead, not sure. Looks appropriate with the dark streaked horn and Sheffield blades. We wanted the scales to be shaped period correct, and I think they came out great.

Im still looking for a blade to go with it. Its a bit oversized so I can still remove material to fit what ever blade I end up getting. I also like the look of the brass lined wedges with this material too. Ive got some bear femur, a little bit of old ivory and some lead balls laying around.


I don't know who made/owns this one but man is it hot.

I just need to find a blade now and let it speak to me...

My birthday is in a few days and I think the family may have picked up a blade since they went antiquing all weekend. Time will tell.
