Set up two mirrors on the other side of the part so that a triangle is formed with you at one corner and a mirror at the other two corners. When the bit is straight vertical from all 3 views, you are perpendicular. After a few thousands holes you kind of get a feeling for perpendicular though.

I think that I am pretty good with using my hands but have never been able to satisfy myself freehand......

I really hate you guys...
Every time I read a new thread on here I find a new toy that I didn't know I needed.
Now I have to get one because my OCD won't let me just walk away. Im tired of being off by a tad freehand drilling my pivot holes."The production of to many usefull things results in too many useless people."

The press workstation works good. I used one for months when I was moving and my wood shop was in storage. You can rotate it 90 degrees, get some small 2-3 inch felt wheels and use it for buffing as well. I restored several razors with it and still have it.

And FYI, if you have a couple different brand rotery tools the threads on the workstation will only properly fit a dremel brand tool. They also make a mini router table that works good for rounding over the edges of your scales.
