Thanked: 14horn not dyed ?
At first I thought this horn was dyed black, and maybe dye thin in some spots. After polishing a couple days with CapeCod cloth the amber colored spots seem to getting blacker rather than lighter.
I like the mottled look. I'm starting to think what I'm seeing is the natural character of the horn. Some new scale blanks on thesuperiorshave are black with white streaks.
I wonder- water buffalo or domestic cattle.... exotic or common. Oh well, back to polishing
P.S. Note the collarless pinning like on ivory of the time. The horn has gone over the peen mushroom some spots. I ope it stays tight for awhile.Last edited by KenG; 05-04-2016 at 07:25 PM.

Thanked: 1184Hard to see in the pics but, yes, horn is a natural and it will look like it. Then there is types, age, colors, and my favorite,,,,, inclusions. Then there is deteriorating things like scaling and bugs. I had a piece of honey horn and was finish sanding and this 1 little divet just wouldn't sand out. 2 spots. So I gave up and polished to find something like a large splinter had gone all the way through and it LOOKS COOL :<0)
I think maybe with yours it had some scaling and was fixed ? Better to have in hand to make that call.Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.
