    Default Puma Rubber Tang Grip

I recently got a Puma razor with a rubber tang grip. The scales were pretty beat up and missing the inlay so need to be replaced and the grip has a couple tears in the corners. I found a few posts about people using heat shrink tubing and some putty stuff to replace them. I was wondering how those worked in the long run or if I should bust remove it and leave it off. Also wondering if there is a way to just seal the splits and if that is actually feasible. Any comment or opinions appreciated.

Someone showed a little rubber pencil grip from the office supply which looked great. Been meaning to go and look for some.

I think Revisor refurbishes some pumas, if they're not NOS. It would be worth a shot to email them on what they use. OTOH, it would be an interesting experiment for you to screw the pivot together and test out different materials. Don't forget the pics!

Just removing the grip is not the answer IMO as the tang and scales are shaped to acommodate the extra width and look wrong without it. I posted in a thread recently how I'd used Sugru to make a replacement - it's held up really well and looks just as good as the original.
My service is good, fast and cheap. Select any two and discount the third.

Your thread is where I seen the putty stuff. I have to replace the scales anyway that's why I was thinking of just removing it instead of replacing. It'll sit on the back burner till I figure out what I want to do. That sugru stuff looks interesting to work with.

My old man had one that had started to degrade. He replaced it with guide thead they was a mixture of black gold silver in a nice pattern then coated in epoxy. He made his own fly rods so he knew what he was doing.

Now, that sounds like a great idea! And, it should preclude moisture from getting underneath..

I am going to have check into that. Since I have to make some scales and not going to worry about making it look original different colored thread might work better with custom scales. So many options.

Remember to round or chamfer the edges of the tang where the insert goes so not to wear or tear the thread while winding
