A First Razor to Practice On
I've gotten this bug bad, so I decided to see what I can begin to do with (light) restoration. I picked up a couple of razors for less than $10 each to practice with. I posted a picture of the first one, a Geneva Cutlery 5/8, on the "What Do You Have In The Mail Right Now" forum, and promised I would continue to post more pictures as I took some baby steps. Here is the original as received:
After spending about 90 minutes this morning first with #0000 steel wool and WD-40, then Mothers Mag Polish, here's where I am now:
There was also a very small chip at the point that I took off by bread knifing on a credit card sized DMT325. You can hardly see it in the original picture but now the point is slightly rounded and very smooth. The chip is no more.
There is still a lot of staining on the blade that could be sanded out, but my thought is that before unpinning and doing any more serious work, I should see if I can get it to take an edge. Looking at the edge through a 60x loupe, I can see a couple of microchips, but overall, I think it looks pretty good. My thought is to try one layer of tape and begin on my Norton 1k. My 1k has a 220 side, but I'm not sure it's necessary.
Suggestions? Any thoughts would be appreciated.-Doug

It looks as though the edge goes into the stabilizer a bit, so this could use some attention. Remember how Glen demonstrated doing that at the meet?
