Default Polishing to a mirror shine

Is it possible to polish an older blade back to mirror shine without damaging the already shave ready edge ? Sorry if this is a silly question I am completely new to this

There are no silly questions. I do not think it is possible. Only thing I can think of is putting electrical tape along edge.

I;ve thought about this and considered gluing the edge with elmer's or some other rubbery glue. Maybe something along the lines of the gooey stuff you find in magazine inserts. Can't say how well it works, but you'll have to be crazy careful to keep the glue in the right spot even when dry.

Use the razor until it needs to be honed, then polish it and have it honed.

Nope. A shave ready, razor edge is very fragile.

I take the edge off every razor, I work on, with a 400 grit Diamond file. Buffing a straight razor is flat out dangerous, a sharp one is asking to be cut.

It is way too easy to cut yourself badly with a sharp razor, when working on it. Buffers, sand paper or polish will wipe an edge quickly.

    Hone it when you’re done.

When ever this question comes up I alway have to wonder if razors were "mirror shine finished" when they were made and sold in the 19th century???
( for some reason, I don't think that they were?)

Yes they were. It was called a crocus finish. The blades were polished on wooden wheels with leather peripheries impregnated with various compound. There are a few here experimenting with the old school methods. Wolfpak34 comes to mind.
